The Networking Event Where Nobody's Present

A room full of people exchanging the same four questions, collecting cards they will never use, performing connection without making any.

A networking event is a rare thing: a social ritual that is almost entirely script, performed by people who mostly know it is a script and do it anyway. The same opening — what do you do. The same follow-up — how long have you been doing that. The same closing move — we should connect, here is my card, let's grab coffee, a coffee both parties understand will not happen. Repeat across the room until the food runs out.

Watch closely and you can see the routine running underneath the words. Eyes scanning over a shoulder for someone more useful. Smiles that switch on at the start of an exchange and off at the end. A handshake, a name immediately forgotten because no one was actually listening, a card pocketed as a token of contact rather than a means of it. Connection is being performed. Almost none is being made.

This is not because the people are NPCs. It is because the format demands a script and the script crowds out presence. The incentives reward volume over depth — meet many, remember none — and the behaviour adjusts accordingly. Everyone arrives intending to make real contact and leaves having made the motions of it.

The break, when it comes, is unmistakable. Two people drop the routine and have an actual conversation, and you can spot them from across the room because they have stopped scanning. The Codex point is small and practical: at the next event, have one real conversation and skip the other twenty. One person who remembers you beats fifty cards in a drawer.
