Rule IV — The Script Is Not Your Story

School, job, retirement, death. The arc was written before you arrived. The only question is whether you signed it.

School, job, retirement, death. The arc was written before you arrived. The only question is whether you signed it.

The fourth rule of the Codex names the default. Your environment generates a character arc for you before you are old enough to refuse it. School, then work, then a long middle, then retirement, then the end. It is delivered as the shape a life takes. It is actually the shape a life takes when no one chooses otherwise.

The arc is not evil. It is a template, and templates are useful. The problem is that a template presented as destiny stops being a choice. Most people run the script not because they examined it and agreed, but because they never saw it as a script at all. It was just the water.

Recognising the script is the first act of a real player. Not rejecting it — recognising it. You may look at the default arc and keep most of it; plenty of it is good. But you keep it on purpose, as a decision, which is a completely different thing from being carried by it.

The second act is rewriting. Not all of it, and not at once. One line at a time. The part that was never yours. The goal that belonged to someone else's expectations. The ending you assumed was fixed. This is not your story — unless you choose it. The fourth rule is the moment you find out you are holding the pen.
