Highway Hypnosis — Twenty Miles, No Memory

You arrive safely. You have no memory of driving. Someone competent handled the road for twenty minutes, and it was not the part of you that was paying attention.

You arrive safely. You have no memory of driving. Someone competent handled the road for twenty minutes, and it was not the part of you that was paying attention.

Most drivers have experienced it. You set out, your mind drifts to something else, and you arrive at your destination with a clean gap where the journey should be. You changed lanes, obeyed signals, adjusted speed, reacted to other cars. You did all of it correctly. You remember none of it. The road was handled by a process that did not loop you in.

Psychologists call this highway hypnosis, a form of automaticity. A skill practised enough becomes a procedure the brain can run below conscious awareness, freeing the conscious mind to wander. It is efficient. It is also slightly horrifying, because it demonstrates that the part of you that narrates your life and the part that operates your body are not the same part — and the second can run for twenty minutes without the first.

The unsettling implication is not that the automatic system is dangerous. It is usually a better driver than your distracted attention would be. The unsettling implication is how much of a day this describes. Walking. Eating. Routine conversation. Whole stretches of life are run by the autopilot while the narrator is elsewhere, then summarised into a single vague memory, or no memory at all.

The honest reading is that consciousness is not in charge of most of what you do, and it knows surprisingly little about it. Highway hypnosis is just the cleanest case, because the gap is so total and the stakes make you notice. The question it leaves is uncomfortable: how much of today did you actually attend, and how much was driven for you?
