1/137 — The Number Feynman Couldn't Explain

One number sets the strength of every electromagnetic interaction in the universe. It is close to 1/137, and nobody knows why.

One number sets the strength of every electromagnetic interaction in the universe. It is close to 1/137, and nobody knows why.

There is a number in physics called the fine-structure constant. It controls how strongly charged particles interact with light — which is to say, it shapes chemistry, the size of atoms, the colours of things, the possibility of stable matter. Its value is roughly 1 divided by 137.036. It has no units. It is a pure number, the same in any system of measurement, the same to any observer anywhere.

Richard Feynman, who understood electromagnetism as well as anyone has, called it one of the greatest mysteries in physics. His point was blunt: we measure it to extraordinary precision, we use it in the most accurate predictions science has ever made, and we have no idea where the value comes from. Nudge it a few percent and atoms do not bind the way they do. Stars burn differently. The chemistry that allows complex structures may not arise at all.

This is one of a small set of dimensionless constants the laws of physics do not predict. The laws take them as input. They are dialled in. Physics tells you what happens given the value; it is silent on why the value is what it is.

The honest reading is that the fine-structure constant looks like a setting. Not derived, not explained, just specified — a parameter the universe was handed rather than one it worked out. A reality with a short list of unexplained dialled-in numbers, each tuned finely enough that small changes would forbid observers, is a reality that behaves like it has a configuration file. We can read the file. We cannot read the reason.
